Multicast is a feature which essentially enables video to be distributed efficiently over a network infrastructure such as the NBN. On the Internet, between your computer and a website like youtube, there are multiple devices data must travel through to reach your computer. A multicast device, situated in close proximity to the end user, is capable of receiving data from one direction and then multicasting that data to multiple receivers, thus saving a large amount of bandwidth. For example, one hundred end users in a suburb watching a live sporting event. Usually a each viewer needs to open a connection to the original source of data, which uses a lot of bandwidth and thus image quality might be effected. Multicasting creates options for content providers to send high definition video because less bandwidth is required to reach multiple viewers. This is another example of how NBN high speed broadband connections will enable the distribution of information across Australia.

Three types of options have been put forward; Adjacent Fibre Network Extensions, Large Fibre Network Extensions and Fixed Wireless Network Extensions. Applications will be considered by NBNco and quotes will be developed on an incremental basis, that is to say only the costs involved in the extension will be charged.

Adjacent Fibre Network Extensions

These extensions are aimed towards multiple premises or individuals. These extensions will be limited by a maximum distance of 8klms from a currently planned NBN fibre access node. Applications from areas that are planned to have fibre rolled out in the future will not be accepted

Large Fibre Network Extensions

For small towns or communities that have been scheduled to receive satellite or fixed wireless services. Community and council organisation is vital here as funding will have to be sourced for the extension. Of course communities that are scheduled to have fibre installed at a later date do not apply.

Fixed Wireless Network

Aimed towards small communities which wish to fund the upgrade to a fixed wireless option instead of a currently planned satellite only option.

First the coalition pushed to abolish the NBN all together, then changed their minds and decided to modify the current labour NBN plans from FTTH (Fibre to the Home) to FTTN (Fibre to the Node). This is big news because over the last few years the coalition failed to provide a policy for the NBN and instead just said they would not abandon the NBN and would continue to build it if in power, though they would make it cheaper. But what they meant was make a cheaper, slower version which sounds goods to win votes. There is evidence that they are just trying to win votes on this policy because everywhere around the world where countries have adopted a FTTN policy they have ended up eventually moving to FTTH, which of course meant a higher cost because essentially they needed to build two infrastructures. With FTTN, fibre is layed up to a node or point in an area, then existing Telsra copper is used to reach the house. This will of course have some speed increase, but nothing like what FTTH would have and will eventually have to be upgraded to FTTH anyway, making the nodes setup previously a waste of tax payers money. Not only that, but because FTTN would rely on Teltsra copper, not only would it be unreliable, it would need a lot of servicing, as it does now because its so old and frail. Furthermore being dependant on Telstra will have further implications. Would Telstra have something to gain from a FTTN policy? I think so. We need to look back at how profitable Telstra has been, once it was a government owned organisation and was privatised, something many Australians regret. It was regrettable because there was no need to sell off a profit making asset for the country. Currently the NBNco was established because our largest teleco companies, ie Telstra, failed to upgrade their network/s to the world standard of fibre, something used around the world decades ago. If a FTTH policy continues as it is now then the NBNco will become what Telstra was, a large profit making government owned organisation.

NBN backhaul fibre links are displayed in the following three pictures, these national backhaul NBN fibre links connect cities, towns, states and territories in Queensland, Australia. The blue lines represent the fibre links, the red are the areas where homes and businesses will be able to connect to the NBN via a 100Mbit to 1Gbit fibre link. Finally, the white zones are the high speed wireless areas. As you can see on the maps below, this is quite a large project and not something that can be done overnight.

So far in Queensland three areas have fibre services available, they include: Aitkenvale in Townsville, Park Precinct in Brisbane and a new estate; the Grantham Rebuild Project in Toowoomba. Also there is one high speed wireless service available, that is in Blanchview, Postmans Ridge, Withcott (Toowoomba). Apart from that, there are fifteen areas in Queensland where constructions have already commenced and or is about to commence within a year. Work in the Cairns suburbs are scheduled to commence next month in August.

According to the release a larger than expected percentage signed up to the faster 50Mbps and 100Mbps plans, meaning there has been a gross underestimate of future turnover. One implication could be that the cost of connecting to the NBN lowers, meaning cheaper plans. For the full article visit Delimiter below.
